The Day My Sister Met a Crow!
I was the original aviary technician for Bevy of Birdhomes; although back then I did not have such an elite sounding title—I was just the girl who cleaned up bird poop! As I got to know different people who were either bored, fascinated, or just trying to avoid their own work while watching me maneuver around in the bird cage, I was surprised to discover how many of them had a phobia of birds. At this time in my life I had not seen Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, which understandably would leave the heartiest of persons a little on edge around the little feathered creatures. And, although these cute tiny birds often latched onto my finger with their beak while I trimmed their nails, the pain was minimal and never tainted my affection for them.
My sister however, did not share this same affection. And, in fact, she was quite afraid of the little guys. Although she has never seen the movie, a little incident from her childhood might explain her fear. On one of our many walks to and from the park close by our home, a rather large crow decided to land on her head. As the older sister, it was likely my responsibility to rescue her tiny body from this giant object perched atop her hair, but I was too busy laughing to notice her frightened cries. Luckily, a neighbor came to the rescue and shooed the bird away, but the scar from that scary afternoon has followed my sister around ever since.
Now, a crow can hardly be compared with the brightly-colored, small birds in our aviary. Crow’s are large, black and generally associated with anything spooky, but despite the obvious differences, she has transferred that fear to all birds. And this happens all the time. Our experiences, what we hear, or see shape how we view or feel about things.
For example, perhaps you have heard or experienced how messy birds can be. This may discourage you from purchasing an aviary; however, with a little research, you would learn that our aviaries are fully-enclosed, and that with our service, any mess is handled for you. Maybe you think birds are stinky, but again, our regular services keep your aviary pristine and fresh, no bad odors to be smelled!
So remember, we all have different fears and concerns based upon our past experiences, but if you keep an open mind and do a little bit of research, often you discover your fears can be overcome.
