The Aviary Owner’s Guide: Toenails and Beaks
As with all animals in human care, it is important to ensure that the feathered friends of the Bevy of Birdhomes aviaries receive the proper maintenance and a clean environment. A large part of bird-care is making sure that their nails and beaks stay short and straight. This simply requires a regularly scheduled visit from one of our aviary technicians who are trained to trim both.
If the toenails on a bird become too long, they can not only cause the bird discomfort and pain, but they can get hooked on various objects in the environment, such as branches and nests, which can result in the bird losing the toenail or even a toe. More importantly, if a bird gets its toenails caught and is unable to free itself, it will not be able to access its food or water.
Likewise, if the beak on a bird grows too long or grows crooked, it could prevent the bird from being able to eat or drink as well. Fortunately, overgrown beaks are a simple fix for our technicians!
We love nothing more than to keep our feathered friends healthy for the viewers of our aviaries to enjoy!
