Just Whistle While You Work!

“Just whistle while you work…”– obeying the simple command in this classic song from a well-beloved Disney movie not only lifts your mood, it can also improve your health.  This is because your organs are receiving a massage when the diaphragm drops down during breathing.  The deep diaphragmatic inhalations that occur during whistling brings more oxygen into the body and promotes healthy blood circulation and a healthy heart rate.  Massage for my organs–sounds good to me!

Often, when I hear birds sing, almost without thought I find myself whistling along, as if somewhere in the deep recesses of my subconscious brain I feel as though I am able to communicate with them. At times I may feel silly that I respond so readily to a bird’s song, but strangely, I also feel better.  Happier. And I’m not alone in this.  Professional whistler Robert Stemmons related that not only can whistling lower your stress, it also can improve your mood; guess I’m not just imagining I feel better!

Knowing all the benefits of whistling has alleviated some of the silliness that I associate when I belt out a tune, but if I was born a bit earlier I would fit right in!  This art was quite popular in the late nineteenth century and on into the beginning of the twentieth.  It was readily used as a means to entertain people.  In fact, Vaudeville often boasted professional whistlers who would imitate birds or other wildlife calls.  They must of been happy, healthy people!

I think it’s time to bring this activity back; so go ahead, whistle while you work!  Maybe you’ll get so good people will pay to listen to you.  And, if you need a good place to start, purchase one of our beautiful aviaries, chocked full of happy, whistling beautiful birds!
